Undergraduate Program

African-American Studies is an interdisciplinary curriculum that examines the experiences of people of African descent in the United States, as well as in sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean. At Columbia University, the Institute offers more than sixty courses in ten different academic departments and programs each year. The academic program for undergraduate students in Columbia College includes a major, a concentration, and a premedical concentration in African-American Studies. The Undergraduate Program Chair is Professor Farah J. Griffin.
